Cookies are small text files a website stores in your browser. We keep our cookie footprint deliberately small. The complete list is below, with what each cookie does and how to opt out of the optional ones.
The cookies we use
| Name | Set by | Type | Purpose | Retention |
|---|---|---|---|---|
trd_session |
TechReaderDaily | Essential | Signs in staff users to the admin area. HttpOnly, Secure, SameSite=Lax. Never set for ordinary readers. | 7 days or until sign-out |
__gads, __gpi, __eoi |
Advertising | Set by Google AdSense to measure ad impressions, frequency-cap ads, and detect fraud. Only set after you allow advertising — without your consent the site makes no ad requests at all. | Up to 13 months | |
IDE, NID, DSID |
Advertising | Set by Google to deliver and personalise ads where you have consented. Only set after you allow advertising. | Up to 13 months | |
_ga, _ga_QRC3MTPLM1 |
Analytics | Set by Google Analytics to distinguish returning readers and measure which stories are read. In the EEA, UK, and Switzerland these are set only after you allow analytics (until then the script never loads); elsewhere they are set by default and you can switch them off below. | Up to 2 years |
Our own view counters remain server-side and cookieless. Google Analytics is opt-in in the EEA, UK, and Switzerland (decline it and the script never loads) and on by default elsewhere, where you can turn it off with the Analytics control below at any time.
Local storage we use
Alongside cookies, the site keeps a few small values in your browser's local storage. These are strictly necessary or store a preference you set, are first-party, and are never transmitted to us or anyone else:
trd_consent— remembers your advertising and analytics choices so we don't ask again.trd.palette,trd.density— your display preferences (colour theme and text density), if you change them.
Your preferences
Use the controls below to update your preferences for non-essential cookies. You can change them here at any time — withdrawing consent takes effect immediately, whether analytics was enabled by you (in the EEA/UK/Switzerland) or on by default (elsewhere). Essential cookies cannot be disabled because the site needs them to work for signed-in staff.

How to control cookies in your browser
Most browsers let you view, manage, and delete cookies in their settings. Steps differ per browser:
- Chrome: Settings → Privacy and security → Cookies and other site data.
- Firefox: Settings → Privacy & Security → Cookies and Site Data.
- Safari: Settings → Privacy → Manage Website Data.
- Edge: Settings → Cookies and site permissions.
Blocking essential cookies will break sign-in for staff users but will not affect read-only access to the site.
Opting out of Google ad personalisation
You can disable personalised advertising on every Google-powered ad, across every site, from your Google account at myadcenter.google.com. Industry-wide opt-outs are available at aboutads.info/choices (US) and youronlinechoices.eu (EU).
